Trailer Towing Accessories: What You Need to Know

Whether you're hauling a couple dirt bikes, a jet ski, a fishing boat, or even a second car or SUV, you should be sure that you're doing it safely. Subaru trailering accessories make that possible.

For one, you'll need a trailer ball mount and trailer ball. These connect both a tow hitch and a trailer coupler. Second, you'll want to get a few security accessories -- a hitch lock or pin, a safety chain or pin, and/or an anti-rattle kit. You stick the lock or pin in the trailer ball to keep the hitch and receiver together. The chain helps keep the trailer from separating, and the kit better secures the ball mount shank.

Third, you'll need some hitch-mount accessories. These include a winch mount, steps, step pads, a license plate holder, and just about everything you can think of in between. Then, get a protectant, like, say, a hitch tube cover. You can also pick up some fish wires for putting on carriage bolts as well as recovery towing accessories like a tow hook and tow straps. Just don't forget to buy the other accessories you need, should you plan to do some fifth-wheel, gooseneck, or ATV towing.

These aren't the only towing parts necessary, either. Consider installing a sway control unit if you don't already have one. It'll stabilize your haul better.

Putting in trailer lighting is also a good idea. It integrates with your taillights, indicating your load's position on the road. You'll need a set of trailer brakes, too. They work with those in your vehicle, adding the needed stopping power for heavier loads.
