The Subaru Forester is a compact SUV that came out in 1998. Its first year, the crossover was available in base, L, and S trims and offered seating for five. It incorporated a 165-horsepower, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine.

In 2003, X and XS trims became options, as did an XT trim and a turbocharged 210-horsepower, 2.5-liter engine in 2004. The 2005 model year introduced XS L.L. Bean Edition and XT Premium trims as well as an output bump for the base engine, to 173 horsepower. In 2006: X and X L.L. Bean Edition trims were offered, as was an XT Limited trim with a 250-horsepower, 2.5-liter turbo engine.

For 2007, Sports X and Sports XT models were available, as was a 224-horsepower, 2.5-liter engine option with a turbocharger. You could get either a manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive was an option. Features included air conditioning, rear disc brakes, alloy wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, a six-CD changer, and more. In 2021, the model came in base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring trims, and features ranged from adaptive LED headlights and active grille shutters to keyless ignition and a windshield-wiper de-icer, among others.
