Lighting: What You Need to Know

It's a broad category in the world of Subaru cars and SUVs. There are several types. The commonest are headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights (DRLs).

All three show your position on the road and off it. A headlight, for example, has both a low-beam setting for everyday driving and a high-beam setting for extreme dark, respectively. Hazard lights (flashers), on the other hand, are a mode, which tells other drivers you need help or that there's danger nearby.

Brake lights, however, tell them that you're slowing down and stopping, while signal lights (blinkers) tell them that you're either turning or changing lanes. Fog lights, though, improve visibility in bad weather. Puddle lights, for yet another example, light up the areas under your vehicle's doors, making seeing and avoiding obstacles easier. Specialty lights are a little different; most draw attention to exterior accessories like license plate frames.

Types of Car Lights

Most are one of three kinds: halogen, LED, or Xenon (high-intensity discharge/HID). When to change a car light bulb depends on what type it is. You should generally replace halogen lighting every couple years, LED lighting if the electronics die or the light itself goes out, and HID/Xenon lighting every few years.
